A Mix of Basic and Advanced CBT Approaches
The way that I work integrates a blend of ‘classic,’ well-tested Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) plus more recent approaches, including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), which are oriented toward cognitive defusion and mindfulness interventions that help individuals to shift their lives toward pursuing their values, rather than remain stuck struggling to overcome their problems. I will help you to choose what works for you.
I MEET YOU WHERE YOU ARE
Sometimes when I work with people with a history of solving challenges for themselves, I simply help them to clarify their thoughts and feelings about one or more issues that they’re now facing, and encourage them to mobilize their inner resources to address these as well.
More often, the people who see me feel stuck and require a more ‘ground-up’ approach to change. I typically begin with a quick, targeted initial assessment, and soon after that I introduce basic but powerful skills to help change their relationship with the thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that are troubling them.
TREATMENT IS PERSON-CENTERED
Treatment is not technique-centered; it is person-oriented. Our work will be structured according to your particular experience, needs and preferences, and is driven by the choices you make from the resources that I offer. It’s your therapy! I’m willing to provide guidance, but not control. That means that some courses of therapy will be highly-structured, and others much more free-flowing, according to what you want. The techniques that I introduce are simply means by which I help you to change your relationship with yourself and your life. Sometimes one new skill or approach is all a person needs to make effective changes. Other times we may use several or more approaches over the course of the therapy.
